One more bag

On to the next bag in my ongoing obsession. TS&WGH had the day off on Monday since Tuesday was the 4th, so I grabbed the opportunity to spend the entire day at my sewing machine. I have had the Amy Butler Weekender Travel Bag pattern for many months now with the intention of re-sizing it to more of a purse size. I never got around to it and Katrin sent me a cute purse pattern which would fit the same niche as the Weekender resized. That and the Whiplash bag challenge inspired me to make the Weekender as-is. At full size I think it is the perfect showcase for some of the hand-woven fabric my sister brought me from Bolivia. Not wanting to make it too ethnic looking, I paired the Bolivian fabric with a favorite Kaffe Fasset print (Kaffe Faset fabrics are the new neutral you know, just like brown). The touches of blue are so the bag coordinates with jeans, of course. I did skip the Timtex on the outer pockets as the hand woven fabric was pretty thick. I don’t miss the Timtex at all. It was cumbersome to work with, but, as the pattern says, go slow and be patient, and it will all be OK. I think the bag turned out pretty hip, and it’s quite substantial and sturdy.
Kaffe Goes to Bolivia for the Weekend

I’ll call it “Kaffe Goes to Bolivia for the Weekend,” but really, I think it will be perfect for me to take to Craft Day with magazines in the outer pockets and a current project stuffed in the ample main section. It is also my entry into the SKILL category of the Whiplash comp. I think it would fit as well into the FANCY category as I like the fabric combos, but I’m pretty pleased with the execution of the fine invisible zipper, lining inside the main section and all pockets, plus all that piping sewn between too many layers of Timtex and interfacing; so I’ll go for skill.

Late addition — here’s a detail of the zipper pull:

Yowza! Piping and zippers and lining! You are so ambitious. I have some woven fabrics my husband brought me from El Salvadore. I was thinking a bag would be the perfect use for them…
